Low-Reynolds-number oscillating boundary layers on adiabatic slopes

چکیده

The presence of a no-slip, impermeable, adiabatic, sloped boundary in an otherwise quiescent, stably stratified, Boussinesq flow generates baroclinic vorticity within diffusive layer. Such conditions are typical the oscillating layers on adiabatic abyssal slopes, lake bathymetry, and coastal bathymetry absence high-wavenumber internal waves, mean flows, far-field turbulence larger scales, resonant tidal-bathymetric interaction. We investigate linear stability non-dimensional parameter space $M_2$ tide hydraulically smooth, mid-latitude slopes through Floquet analysis. dynamics depend three variables: Reynolds number for Stokes' second problem (Re), Prandtl number, frequency ratio that accounts resonance (C, criticality) buoyant restoring force tidal forcing. analysis results suggest laminar increasingly unstable as criticality parameter, and/or spanwise disturbance wavenumber increased. also show two-dimensional instability necessarily three-dimensional vorticity, which suggests evolution gravitational instabilities may be nonlinear $t\rightarrow\infty$.

Singular Perturbations in Simple Low Reynolds Number Flows: from Boundary Layers to the Renormalization Group

The seemingly simple problem of determining the drag on a body moving through a very viscous fluid has, for over 150 years, been a source of theoretical confusion, mathematical paradoxes, and experimental artifacts, primarily arising from the complex boundary layer structure of the flow near the body and at infinity. We review the extensive experimental and theoretical literature on this proble...

High Reynolds number oscillating contact lines

For the eventual use as regards wave generation and damping, we investigate oscillating contact lines on vertical walls. Stainless steel is used rather than the glass of Ting and Perlin [J. Fluid Mech. 295 (1995) 263] for the vertically sinusoidally oscillating plate over a large range of Reynolds numbers. The non-wetting stainless steel minimizes the static meniscus ignored in our analysis. Ot...

Shear-induced convective mixing in bottom boundary layers on slopes

Field data from a stratified lake demonstrate that buoyancy-driven convective mixing can be an important mechanism for the formation of well-mixed bottom boundary layers (BBLs) on slopes. Convective turbulence is caused by differential transport of stratified water masses along the slope of a basin. Because the current velocity usually decreases toward the sediment, water at some distance from ...

Stochastic low Reynolds number swimmers.

As technological advances allow us to fabricate smaller autonomous self-propelled devices, it is clear that at some point directed propulsion could not come from pre-specified deterministic periodic deformation of the swimmer's body and we need to develop strategies for extracting a net directed motion from a series of random transitions in the conformation space of the swimmer. We present a th...

Organised motions in turbulent boundary layers over a wide range of Reynolds number

The motivation behind this paper comes from the large-scale coherence that has been recently reported in the near-wall and logarithmic regions of wall-bounded turbulent flows. Associated with these are inclined vortical structures that populate the near-wall region. Most often these inclined structures have been inferred as hairpin shaped vortices that have been observed experimentally and evid...
